Recognising patients approaching End of Life

Not all Ed nurses or doctors have the time or knowledge to be able to recognise a patient who presents with symptoms that are no longer appropiate for treatment.

It takes courage and skill to have conversations with patients and families regarding end of life care.

A specialist nurse who has appropriate skills based in the ED will be able to direct the patient to the most appropriate area for them ie: back to the nursing home, directly in to a palliative care bed or back to their own home with community support.

Why the contribution is important

This idea will mean  the patient does not have unecessary proceedures or tests saving money and  will hopefully spend less time in the ED keeping more ED beds for emergencies and, getting the appropriate care they require in the appropriate place.
