Promotion of services
The Queensland Nurses and Midwives Union (QNMU) suggests a number of different approaches that can support people to find the right care instead of attending an emergency department:
- The promotion of the 13 HEALTH phone service that provides health advice from RNs to Queenslanders. This service while it does not serve as a diagnostic service, could be further promoted to inform the public of other alternatives other than going to emergency as their first action. With education, patients would call the 13 HEALTH service.
- The role of nurse navigators in Queensland are still evolving and with studies and research these highly skilled nurses could be well positioned to provide assistance to patients in supporting them to find the right care instead of attending an emergency department.
- A centralised real-time database that provides information about general practitioner practices and if there are appointments available, negating the need to go to an emergency department. This could be a smart phone app and a website.
- Funding for more community-based extended-hours services. This would provide an alternative for people having to present to hospital emergency departments.
Why the contribution is important
We believe our ideas are practical and not only support current initiatives but also suggest new strategies.
