Hot line to relevant specialist
Western Sydney have developed a hot line - 1300 number - for cardiology press 1, resp 2, endocrinology 3 to allow GP direct access to registrar/consultant for urgent advice to avoid the need to send patients to ED.
Need to protect the clinicians time to be able to respond to these calls. It doesn't work if stuck in clinic on ward round and requires appropriate rostering.
Why the contribution is important
Often the GP needs on the spot clinical advice when they are with a patient and don't want to meet a brick wall at the hospital switch board or passed on from one person to another. This can avoid unnecessary referrals to ED and allow more appropriate outpatient management.
