Develop an app/survey that allows patients to rate their symptoms and then provides a list of appropriate service options based on time of day, location etc.
Develop an app or online survey type tool where patients are able to enter their symptoms, the frequency/duration, rate the severity and, importantly, rate their level of concern about their symptoms. Once submitted, the patients are presented with a list of appropriate services or next steps to determine appropriate course of action. (This could include calling 13 Health, and of course always have the disclaimer that should they feel it is an emergency to go to ED.)
The algorithm could be based on the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) guidelines used in ambulance call centres and whatever other telephonic triage tools are used in other areas of health.
Why the contribution is important
A lot of the inappropriate presentations to the ED are because patients do not understand their available options, particularly when illness or injury occurs outside the hours of GP clinics.
A self-assessment type tool allows patients to consider their sympoms objectively and in doing so, may realise that although they feel terrible, their symptoms are not requiring an emergency department.
