Universal design standard for all new and modified housing

That National Construction Code mandates that all new housing and retrofits be designed to universal housing design standards in order to facilitate an appropriate stock of accessible housing into the future, consistent with commitments made in the Council of Australian Governments’ National Disability Strategy 2010-2020.

Why the contribution is important

There a significant number of avoidable hospital stays because:

  • people are injured or further incapacitated by the inaccessible design of their home;
  • people cannot get home from hospital after an injury or illness because of the inaccessible design of their home; and
  • formal and informal care providers are put at risk of injury because of the inaccessible design of the patient's home.
