Midwives completing baby checks

Midwives have the skills and knowledge to provide care to women from pre-conception to 6 weeks postpartum. In maternity invariably discharge is delayed (often for hours) by women waiting for paediatric discharge checks. To reduce the wait time and assist women to get home quicker, create a process (learning package and support to consolidate skill) for midwives to perform baby discharge checks in well term babies. This is well within the scope of midwifery care.

Why the contribution is important

Often women in birthsuite are left waiting for beds in the maternity ward while women in the maternity ward await paediatric discharge checks. Often the paed Drs are managing sick children in Lamb and ED.

Creating the space for midwive sto complete the well baby discahrge check will assist women get home to their families earlier and reduce bed block in maternity services.
