Benefits of technology

The benefits of ensuring technology supports the patient (and those providing care) through their admission, discharge and beyond are numerous.  These benefits include:

  • Improvement of health practitioner’s knowledge of patients’ medical conditions, thus reducing the number of referrals for diagnostic tests.
  • Continuity of care for patients.
  • Improved information sharing between health practitioners.
  • Reduced risk of lost information.
  • For those patients with complex medical histories, chronic diseases and/or co-morbidities, it will track their health over their lifespan and provide a unified view of their health.
  • Increasing access to healthcare with the use of telehealth.

Further, we suggest it’s important for Metro South HHS consider:

  • Access for nurses and midwives to hardware and user friendly, reliable software.  For example, nurses and midwives could see patient information using mobile technology.
  • Manageable workloads.  Technology must reduce rather than add to nurses’ and midwives’ workloads and increase clinical contact times and opportunities.
  • Technology must improve the workflow and not disrupt the process of clinical care.
  • Adequate training and refresher courses – including assurances there are confidentiality measures in place to safeguard patient health information.
  • Paid leave to undertake technology training.

Why the contribution is important

Consistent software applications and technology that communicates with other systems in public and private facilities allows for greater communication between health practitioners and greater continuity of care.
